District public health nurse is district level nurse, she work under the district health officer (DHO) or Chief medical officer (CMO).
Now, she is appointed via the state health department via directorate of health services, but now she is appointed under the national health mission.
The main role of district public health nurse is to supervise all the nursing activities, personnel at health centers like PHC, subcenter and CHC.
She act as communicator for district level administration and to ground level health activities.

- She provide guideline to health worker such as staff nurse, ANM, MPW, Asha worker
- She manage nursing personnel at PHC, CHC and subcenter
- She is focused on organizing MCH activities
- She is responsible for implementation of health programs
- She look after supplies and equipment and budget
- To maintain cold chain work and infrastructure
- She monitor programms like mass immunization program, ANC registration, vital statistics etcc.
- She also work on finding any outbreak or epidemic in the district and prepare for such incident
- She monitor disease surveillance program for specific disease like leprosy, Tb etc
- Conduct surprise visit to health center
- To focus on nationa health programs like, control, eliminate or eradication of disease
- To keep the record of student nurse
- To conduct inservice education to staff
