Rajya sabha is the upper house of the parliment body.
Since, there are two legislative houses in India, Lok sabha and rajya sabha.
Lok sabha members are elected via election as member of parliment. However, rajya sabha has a different way of selecting its members.
Rajya sabha members are elected via the member of parliment through vote system.
How many seats are in Rajya Sabha?
So, there are total 250 seats are present in rajya sabha, of which 238 seats are selected based on vote from MP in the Parliment.
12 Seats were selected by the president of India for their contribution to any fields such as literature or social science or art.
The seats of rajya sabha is parmanent, but two third of its members are retired every two years.
The vice president of India is the chairmen of the Rajya sabha. It means the sessions of the rajya sabha is dictated by Indias vicepresident.
How Rajya Sabha members are selected?
The first, both ruling party and opposition party nominate some of their candidates for rajya sabha seats.
Then, MP (member of parliment) votes for them, this is called as Proportional Representation by Single Transferable Vote (STV).
So, those candidate will get more votes from MP are selected in Rajya sabha.
Functions of Rajya Sabha
- Bill passed in lok sabha isnt enough, it must be passed into the rajya sabha for its to be approved finally.
- Rajya sabha sessions discusses peoples problems, issues, raises questions to the government and hold them accountable for that.
- Controvertial bills get challenged in the lok sabha, has detailed debate and then only it gets passed
