PM Cares Fund – Why 8,452 Crore is In Fixed Deposits

The PM cares fund publicise its audit report for financial year of 23-24 and 24-25 on their official website. It was upload on the August 7, 2026.

In this report, most of the funds were not utilized and remain in the fixed deposit, even though the India is dealing with various disasters and economic pressures. It created the debate over the transparency and utilization of money for what use?

Actual how much money is present in the PM cares fund?

So, the official website has published data, that shows the financial year of 2024 to 25, PM cares fund has surplus of 8452 crore rupees. The total amount of money spent on the financial year is of 87.85 lakhs only. Not even the 1 crore. It agains means that the utilization of PM cares fund is of 0.01% less than 1 percent also.

The PM cares funds has dropeed the domesting contributions. It has been fall by 30 percent compared to the previous years. 2023-24 year domestic donations recieved in PM cares fund are 681 crore and now 25-26 it is only of 479 crore rupees. Increased in the money is due to the fixed deposit earnings happened due to bank.

Comparison below showing the financial values and donations recieved in this years, 

  1. Domestic donations are of 479 crores.
  2. Foreign donations are 92.80 lakh rupees
  3. Total expenditure is only of 87 lakh rupees
  4. Final balance is 8452 crore rupees.

Debate is arising as it is a strategic reserve of money or no utilization occur here.

Many activist and opposition leaders are questioning the governent why they did not use this money to the people. Why they let the money kept in banks for interest rather to use for the people.

Furthermore, today the PM cares fund is out from the RTI act, parlimentary oversight and standard audit. So, the transparency and utilization of the public interest money is questionable. And also thousand of crore rupees of peoples money is there, so accountability issues can also arises.

Governement explains that they will use this money in case of major disaster like covid 19 and pandemic, utilizing it in larger projects and also waiting for budget allocations from bureaucrate.
