Mukharjee Committee – Recommendation and Impact on Public Health

Mukharjee committee

Mukharjee committe is head by the Shri B. Mukherjee, he was the union health secreatory at that time. The committe has play important role in separating the adminstrative services of health from other family planning initiatives.

Why the Mukherjee Committee Formed?

Earlier chaddha committee has recommended to utilize the malaria surveillance worker to family planning activities. It leads to dual work and both the activities suffer as it overburdens the field workers. To solve this issue and review the health system mukharjee committee has formed.

1965 Mukharjee committe role 

Committee was appointed in late 1965, focusing on the National family planning programme. During that time, the government has scaled up the IUD device insertion but the problem is of inadequate staff, lack of resourses and fund. So, the committee finds the solution of staffing pattern and financial budget to smoothly take place of the family planning services.

 Key recommendations of the Mukharjee Committee

  1. Separate malaria and family planning programme – The committe separate the malaria maintenane workers from family planning workers. They will now focus on their primary objective only.
  2. Create Basic Health Worker (BHW) – Committe recommend to form BHW, Basic health worker, who will take care of the routine work in the hospitals. The committe also introduced the female health visitor.
  3. Create financial structure from central government to state government to manage the funds
  4. It understand the rural and urban health infrastructure need to be different and design a separate plan for it.
